Vision Statement and Guiding Principles

The Vision Statement and Guiding Principles form the philosophical backbone of the plan. The Vision Statement is an aspirational statement about where we want our city to be in the year 2040. The Guiding Principles are broad ideals that we need to aspire towards in order to achieve our Vision Statement.

1. We will highlight and build on the historic and cultural assets that make Athens one-of-a-kind.

2. We will nurture our high-quality neighborhoods and expand affordable and accessible housing.

3. We will seek collaborative economic opportunities that build on the entrepreneurial efforts of our community, organizations, and institutions.

4. We will strive for a sustainable future which includes renewable energy, a healthy environment, and opportunities to connect with nature.

5. We will leverage technology to expand our economic base and provide services for citizens and visitors.

6. We will promote multi-modal and active transportation solutions that better connect our neighborhoods and each other.

7. We will celebrate the artistic and creative spirit of our community.

8. We will be inclusive for all regardless of race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin or ancestry, marital or familial status, religious belief, age, disability, or economic status.
